Tahajjud is a Nafl prayer, but Allah has set a great reward for those who offer this. Therefore, people often wonder what is the best time to pray Tahajjud? 

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: The best prayer after the fard prayers is the prayer in the middle of the night. – Mishkat al-Masabih 1236

Tahajjud Timings

Tahajud can be prayed at any time of the night, after the Isha Prayer and moments before the break of dawn; that is Fajr prayer.

Aisha رضي الله عنها said that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offered Tahajud from every portion of the night.  

It means that Prophet Muhammad ﷺt used to pray Tahajud at the beginning of the night, sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes later at night, or in the last moments of the night.

Best time for Tahajjud

It is a consensus among all Islamic scholars that the best time to offer Tahajjud prayer is the last third of the night. For example;

• Isha Time: 9:00 pm.
• Fajr Time: 5:00 pm.
• Best Time for Tahajjud: 2:30 to 5:00 pm.

It is also evident from the following verse of the Holy Quran.

• And rise at the last part of the night, offering additional prayers, so your Lord may raise you to a station of praise. – Al-Isra 17:79
• And glorify Him during part of the night and at the fading of the stars. – At-Tur 52:49

It is the time that is called the predawn moment when Allah descends to the first heaven and looks upon his servants who are seeking his forgiveness and also those who are seeking his mercy.

Tahajjud during Ramadan

During Ramadan, it is easy for people to pray Tahajud after waking up for Suhoor. We should get up, make wudu, pray 2 Nafl of Tahajjud, and then start eating Suhoor.

How to pray Tahajjud?

The Tahajjud prayer is offered precisely the same way as any two Rakah namaz is offered. To offer tahajjud prayers, follow the following steps:

1- Wake up in the middle of the night. It is important to have a nap and wake up from sleep to offer the Tahajud prayers. We have already explained the best time to perform Tahajjud above.

• And rise at the last part of the night, offering additional prayers so your Lord may raise you to a station of praise. – Al-Isra 17:79

2- Perform Wudu.

3- As per the sunnah, recite the intention for the Tahajjud prayer, which is أُصَلِّي سُنَّةَ التَهَجُّد رَكعَتَينِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى. 

4- Now perform two Raka’ats of the tahajjud prayer; you can offer as many rakats which are in multiple twos. So you will have to end the prayer after every two rakats.

The night prayer is offered as two Rakat followed by two Rakat. – Sahih al-Bukhari 990

5- Offer your dua; ask Allah with a pure heart and intention. Seek forgiveness and be as humble in seeking blessings as you can be!

6- End your Tahajud prayer with Witrs. Witr is usually offered with the Isha prayers, but if you offer the Tahajud prayers, you will offer the witr after the Thajud prayers.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: He who prayed at night should make Witr the end of his prayer. – Sahih Muslim 751

However, if you have already performed the Witr prayer with Isha, there is no need to repeat them after Tahajjud.
