PLCC: Plastic-Leaded Chip Carrier

PLCC is an abbreviation of "Plastic-Leaded Chip Carrier". It is a type of surface-mount device based integrated circuit package that has a plastic covering in the rectangular shape and can be used to facilitate Integrated circuits on a printed circuit board in the process of mounting them either straightforwardly through soldering on the board or inside a socket. It is a cheap rate revision of the ceramic leadless chip carrier (CLCC).

In the case of a leadless chip carrier (LCC), it contains no leads, however, rounded smooth curved pins throughout the ends of the ceramic or molded plastic package contained by the LCC.

PLCC History

• In 1976, PLCC was first time launched.
• In 1981, in the classification of PLCCs, the JEDEC trade group began an undertaking force.
• In 1984, the JEDEC trade group launched the square packages of PLCCS with the MO-047 standard.
• In 1985, it launched the rectangular packages of PLCCS with the MO-052 standard.

Advantages of PLCC

• The most significant advantage of an SMD PLCC is that by the use of socket it can be associated with the circuit.
• The similar SMD chip configuration can also be used in the standard SMT configuration, by facilitating PLCCs on a printed circuit board in the process of mounting them either straightforwardly through soldering on the board or inside a socket.
• This process of mounting an SMD chip on a printed circuit board has considerable benefits in case of a replaceable chip when required for advancement.
• In the experiential heating case, when the procedure of soldering could cause damage to the SMD chip, a socket can be supplemented to the circuit board and subsequent to the completion of soldering, PLCC can be introduced, which makes the high temperature low and diminish the experience of heating.
