Tom Hanks is one the greatest actors of all time having starred in classics like; Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away to name but a few.

At the age of 65 Hanks shows no sign of stopping, he’s appearing in three films this year including the hotly anticipated Elvis biopic, in which he plays Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker.

Hanks has earned two Academy Awards, for his performance in Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in 1994, he became only the second man to win the Best Actor award in consecutive years. 

In a time when an increasing number of Hollywood actors are moving towards superhero series and continually playing the same role, Hanks has maintained the approach of starring in stand-alone great movies. With the notable exception of Toy Story, but I think that’s probably a fair decision.

For his performance in Forrest Gump Hanks made about $70 million, equivalent to around $120 million today. These major earnings were underpinned by his decision to exchange his salary for ‘first dollar’ backend points whereby he didn’t earn any money upfront for the role but instead took a percentage of the film’s $680 million worldwide box office earnings.

Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson’s real estate portfolio is estimated at $150 million, this includes a ski chalet in Sun Valley, Idaho. 

He’s also donated to the campaigns of a number of Democratic politicians including both of President Obama’s presidential campaigns and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
