Member Nov 5, 2017 35,684 In terms of the One Piece Artstyle - there have been 3 major changes to the artstyle in the anime. The Artstyle that was mostly used during the Pre-Time Skip Era:
The Artstyle mostly used in Post Time Skip
The Artstyle Used in Wano:
Chivalry

Banned Oct 25, 2017 4,614 Whole Cake Island was also a massive shift in art style that looks really good. I think Wano is my favorite out of that bunch, but my favorite art style for the anime had to the direction they went in water 7. It was fluid and not as sharp which I think aided the looney tunes nature of the series.Starwing

Member Oct 26, 2017 7,600 I thought more people would be saying post over pre considering how people seem to stan the "softer more "animated"" look when it comes to other anime and their artstyle changes. Though I haven't actually seen the series and don't really know what it's like in motion or anything, just going off of these images.Blade30
Member Oct 26, 2017 6,165 I like the old style, it had charm and looked unique. Also look at hat Robin change... :sigh:TheGamingNewsGuy said: The Pacing has always been iffy but Dressrossa was much worse Click to expand... Click to shrink...That's one of the reasons why I dropped out, iirc the dressrossa arc in the anime is over 100 episodes long which is insane, but if remove all the recaps and stuff then the episode count should much lower.

Avenger Oct 29, 2017 11,026 Old style for sure. Just something about the lanky whimsicalness and roughness has so much more charm in that form. Wank looks amazing in places, too, and when it gets its big moments I wouldn't be surprised if it surpasses the original for me. The new world style looked like dogshit for the majority of its run, I'm sorry. And I'm not a fan of the simplified artstyle and more safe art direction (i.e. less warped fisheye perspectives, too on model most of the time, more muscle men and size Infinity cupped women, etc.).Reym
Member Jul 15, 2019 2,843 Old One Piece episodes feel so cozy. I still love watching them even with the janky animation. It felt more like a pirate adventure. Wano doesn't recapture that magic, but it does something new and I really like it.WaveBird

I would give up my knowledge of almost any other anime just to go back to that early days of One Piece look. It's what got me into the series and has me staying despite what it's looked like post-ts(esque). Spoiler I also think I enjoy the older stuff a lot because of Oda's focus on the SH Crew versus the world at large now and the ugly time skip designs but that's for another topic.

Member Sep 22, 2019 4,203 Old all the way. Matches the cartoony and storybook-esque feeling of the world to a T, and just gives the series a unique feeling to itself. The backgrounds could sort of be nonexistent at times, but that was part of the charm of the aesthetic at the same time imo Wano is good past that, but honestly I don't think the crisp-clean HD look fits the style of One Piece as well, much less the generic AAA animation focus when it is "amazing". One piece has always excelled at high-impact frames from very specific angles setting the tone for specific fights, selling the "moments" themselves, but the go-to method for any modern high-budged anime or movie fight is to fill in all the "blanks" with buttery smooth movement, flashy effects, and dynamic animation above all else, without much thought being put into if it matches the impact of the source material Like say, we have this amazing low frame intro for a movie, and it emphasizes all the sorts of framing the series typically flaunts in manga form: But then the actual fight scenes everyone fauns over are just typical animator flex without any actual pause on moments of impact, focusing on more generic forms of "amazing final battle" tactics and methods to impress than the series' main strength for conveying the fights. Don't get me wrong, displaying stills in fight scenes is still lazy in terms of animation; this still happens in the anime just to be cheap, and I don't want it to just be like that. But attempting to bring One Piece into the modern animated scene has mostly been about copying how everyone else does a fight scene so far, involving whether the choreography is impressive, the movement is believable, the action is rapid fire and high intensity, or the inbetween frames for the fights are just smooth as all get out and clearly took a lot of time to draw together. But at the very least the old style knew what moments mattered in terms of impact, and drew those wide-angle spreadshots for every one of them that was impressive. If we could emphasize some of that in a new, modern style of animation rather than defaulting to the generic industry standard, I'd appreciate it a lot more than what we have now, but as it stands One Piece's animation and fight scenes just aren't that impressive for what they are. They never have been. It's always been the moves, the panels they're drawn in, and the framing of the shot that have been the highlight strength of the series's action.Rosebud
