Gerard Way Created 'The Umbrella Academy' And Is Still Making Music

My Chemical Romance is part of a long group of bands who got back together, but while the bandmates were off on their own, they all did something cool and interesting with this time.

In 2021, Gerard Way talked about writing music and fans wondered if he would be making new music sometime.

According to Kerrang.com, Gerard talked about working with Doug McKean and explained, “But what’s been working lately is sitting with Doug, working on the music, and then I’ll just go over to my office – which used to be Marion Peck’s painting studio, and I love that room – and I will sit while Doug mixes, tweaks, edits, programs more drums… I’ll literally sit there and I will write as close as possible to what I think are gonna be either the final lyrics, or at least what I’m comfortable singing at that moment.”

Gerard Way also wrote the comic book series The Umbrella Academy which is now a popular Netflix show.

Gerard Way talked about The Umbrella Academy in an interview with NME.com and said that he had a comic book shop job at 15 years old. He always loved comics and studied cartooning at New York City's School of Visual Arts. He also used a typewriter that belonged to his grandma and was always creating comics.

Gerard said that as My Chemical Romance thrived, he knew that he wanted another creative oulet: he said, “Then the band gets bigger and more successful, but the whole time I miss this other part of my life that I had to kinda walk away from. I really missed comics, and I had always loved them. One of the things that really inspired me is I was on tour, and DC had just started to re-release Grant Morrison and Richard Case’s Doom Patrol, so I started reading those.

Mikey Way Has A Solo Music Career

Gerrard Way's brother Mikey Way has also been working on some interesting creative projects. Mikey talked about Electric Century, the band that he has with David Debiak who is also known for being part of the band Sleep Station.

According to Kerrang.com, Electric Century put out an album with a graphic novel. Mikey said, “The benefit of this project is that it is a pandemic, and people aren’t able to do conventional things to release art, so it’s pretty cool – this was going to be unconventional anyway, but I think people are now more open to something unconventional."

NME.com reported that Mikey also worked on the comic book series Collapser which is put by the Young Animal imprint of DC.

Ray Toro Became A Dad And Frank Iero Got Into An Accident

After My Chemical Romance broke up in 2013, Ray Toro became a parent.

In an interview with Louder Sound, Ray said that it was really amazing to be able to stay home and be with his family. He explained, “I’ve been raising my son and enjoying time with him and the wife. I’ve had some nice family life that I’ve never had a chance to enjoy before because we were on the road so much. It’s nice to feel like we’re building something as a family. It’s nice to lay roots down rather than just work all the time.”

According to My Chemical Romance Fandom, Ray has two sons (born in 2012 and 2015), but the couple keeps their family life pretty private.

Frank Iero went solo and created the band Frank Iero and the Patience. He got into a horrible accident in 2016: as the musician told MTV, he was standing outside a van in Australia and a bus literally crashed into him and the people he was with. He was right under the bus's bumper.

While My Chemical Romance did get back together in 2019, they planned a big tour that is now taking place in the spring of 2022. According to the statement on the band's official website, they are looking forward to playing together again. The band wrote, "We cannot wait to visit some of our favorite cities in the world, and to be with you again. Until then - happy holidays and stay healthy."
