In Hindu tradition, women usually pierce the left side of the nose. This has ties to Ayurveda. Ayurvedic medicine is a holistic system that dates back thousands of years, connecting the mind and body. 

There are claims that piercing the left side can alleviate the pain of menstruation and/or childbirth. However, it is unclear whether this is an actual belief from Ayurvedic medicine or an idea that was introduced when it was brought to the Western world in the 1960s. In Hindu culture choosing the left side is more about tradition than effect.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the left side was believed to be the female side, and right the masculine side. Some people use this as a reason to choose their facial piercings on the left side for females or right side for males. However, in modern culture, there really isn’t a male or female side.

If you can find that one side has meaning to your for personal or cultural reasons, that can be a good choice for your nose piercing.

When determining the ideal side for your nose piercing, several factors should be taken into account.

 

Face Shape

Facial symmetry plays a crucial role in deciding which side to pierce. Many individuals choose to pierce the side that complements their natural facial features. Analyze your face in the mirror to determine if one side appears more balanced or aesthetically pleasing than the other.

Hairstyle

If you have a hairstyle that covers part of one side of your face, you’ll usually want to put the nose piercing on the opposite side. This improves visibility and adds a visual balance.
