Deer make a variety of different sounds including snorts, bleats, baas, grunts and clicking noises. Different sounds are used by bucks, does and fawns for different types of communication.

All deer make a warning whinny-like snort when they feel uneasy or sense danger. This warns other deer of possible danger. When trapped or truly distressed, deer bawl with a loud “baa” sound which brings does running protectively. Bucks grunt loudly to express dominance when challenging other bucks. They make a softer but similar grunt sound alternately with a clicking sound when pursuing does during mating season. Does call back and forth to each other when grazing in a group with a long rising and falling “err-err-err” sound. Fawns bleat with a mew-like sound to call to their mothers. The mew is louder and higher if the fawn is distressed or hungry.
