Wondering about time in Costa Rica? Do you know what time it is in Costa Rica? Costa Rica is 6 hours behind GMT. It currently follows Central Standard Time (CST), along with countries like, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. Please note that this country does NOT observe daylight savings time, which means that Costa Rica corresponds to U.S. Central Time approximately from October to March, and U.S. Mountain Time when the United States is in daylight savings time (roughly from March to October).

Why does Costa Rica not observe daylight savings time?

This beautiful country is located near the equator, and therefore, there are 12 hours of sunshine and 12 hours of night each year, year-round. When Costa Rica adopted Central Standard Time in 1992, the authorities decided not to observe daylight savings time because of the nearly equal days and nights. Costa Rica is a great place for early-birds as the sun rises at about 5:30 a.m. and sets around 5:30 p.m. The length of days varies by only half an hour between seasons. One can watch the sunrise over the ocean on the country’s Caribbean Coast and observe the sunset on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast all in one day. Due to the fact that Costa Rica is only 10 degrees north of the equator and is located to east of Tallahassee, Florida, the sun rises and sets early. Just remember that when you put your clock forward 1 hour in the spring, the time in Costa Rica does not change.
