I was wondering what type of attire is expected of teachers chaperoning prom. Thanks! Mrs. K.

We usually dress up a bit, but not to excess. Last year I wore a simple short black dress with flutter sleeve, little black sandals, and a lightweight gold shawl. I was perfectly comfortable all night (except my feet hurt - I'm not used to heels!) B

I wear a suit. M

When I have chaperoned formals, men wear suits and women wear either a nice dress or a nice pants outfit. Think of something you'd wear going out to a very nice dinner, and that's what most of the chaperones will be wearing. Some gals from my department and I always chaperone the winter formal and it's kind of fun getting dressed up for it. Aliceacc

I agree. I wear a nice dress and the guys normally wear a suit. catnfiddle

Gah, I envy the ability to just say, "I wear a suit." I look terrible in them! mrachelle87

We could host this year, but my son is going. So I don't want to cramp his style. But in the past I wore a nice dress and heels. Husband were a suit and tie. Ms. I

I've never had to do it, but ladies can wear a not-too-casual dress or skirt & blouse w/ heels or other nice shoes & men should wear a suit. You want to look nice, but still look authoritative. catnfiddle

One thing I highly recommend (and this is from my mom, who chaperoned at least 20 proms) is that you keep an emergency kit for your students. You should have at minimum safety pins, bobby pins, sanitary pads and pain relievers. Considering my mom needed those safety pins at MY Senior Prom because the elastic on her skirt broke (thankfully I was on the other side of the room and missed it), she swears by this list. MrsC

That's a great idea, catnfiddle! DizneeTeachR

Catnfiddle... I would try to stick all that in a clutch when I went to prom's...what do you need money for?!?!LOL!!! Other thing may be bobby pins for girls hair!!! I always stashed an extra pair of nylons!!! On another note my step mom did a kit like this for a wedding it was really nice to have all that stuff in one place!!! I think you should wear a 1980/90s prom dress with all the sequins. Geesh I keep telling fam member they could have mine to wear, but no takers!!! LOL!!! Aliceacc

Ah, yes. And include bandaids too. catnfiddle

D'OH! I forgot to include those. Prom shoes cause tons of blisters. M

Prom at the school where I work is tonight, and I bought a dress to wear, but I'm worried I'll be dressed too much like a kid. There's nothing formal to wear (anywhere I can afford to shop) for between the ages of 18 and 75. I did the best I can, but we'll see... It got this dress: http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.asp...cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=50434|50444|64329|64334 S

I think you'll look perfectly appropriate in that dress. I chaperoned prom last year and plan on doing it again next year. I wore something similar. mmswm

Add to the prom emergency kit: two sided tape. We had some girls with some near wardrobe malfunctions... T

great ideas, CatnFiddle...but, I would skip on the pain relievers. Where I'm from, kids get suspended if they even have a tylenol on them...can you imagine a teacher handing them one.?? Aliceacc

Good point Sandra. I would bring the Tylenol for the adults. But I don't ever give the kids any sort of medication. And I LOVE that dress!!! You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Facebook X (Twitter) Reddit Pinterest Tumblr WhatsApp Email Share Link
