What Year Does BNHA Take Place In?

Now that I’ve watched BNHA up to episode 34, I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of different things that I’ve been thinking about, especially the history of One for All/All for One. One of the main things that got me thinking when first watching it was what year this could take place in, because the technology in the Anime/Manga feel like the technology that we have here now, but when learning about the history of One for All we find out that Deku is the ninth person to take up the torch.

This then leads me to think that it must be a really old Quirk, considering that there were eight others, including All Might, that held the torch before Deku.

But when hearing about the true history of One for All, and the reveal of All for One and how the former manifested in the first carrier, a man with a strong conviction for justice versus an older brother who, assuming, hated the world and everyone in it, forced a Quirk onto him, only to become the antithesis of All for One.

Therefore, if we are to assume that after the original passed his torch to the first inheritor of One for All, and carried the torch with them for about 20-40 years, and passed the torch on to the next inheritor in the same fashion, and we are to assume that they each carried One for All for the same number of years (let’s say 30), then it can be assumed that One for All is, at the very least, 140 years old. At the most it can be upwards of 280 years, not counting the newest torch bearer, and not counting the first to hold One for All.

This then leads me to think of the carrier of All for One, and All Might even mentions that he could have taken a Quirk that wouldn’t let him age (or maybe even age slowly, some variant of that), that could mean that the one who has All for One might be somewhere between 300 and 350 years old.

So, where, exactly, does this bring us. To help narrow down just what century BNHA takes place in.

And because it all “started” with a baby that glowed, we could assume that they were born sometime between 2020 and 2025 (what can I say round numbers are nice), and shortly after more and more people with Quirks cropped up.

But, if we are to assume that those with Quirks had been around for a long time, especially those with Quirks that weren’t “obvious” (for example Uraraka’s Zero Gravity, and Iida’s Engine, basically Quirks that can be hidden because the holders of said Quirks look like humans), then it can be assumed that those with Quirks could have hidden them long before they were “officially” discovered by the world.

One final thing to consider though, is how the chaos of those with Quirks came to occur, especially because All Might and Deku mention that human society and progress was halted, as those of the time were unable to coexist with those who had Quirks. Quirks that could be extremely dangerous and powerful in the wrong hands, which can explain why everything, the technology, architecture, and society feels the same as it does now.

This now brings me to here, to what year (nothing too precise, the closest I can get is within the decade) BNHA takes place in. If we are to assume that it “starts” in 2020, but the first holder of One for All, came to be about 10 years later, in 2030, and passed on the torch within that year, and we are to assume that the Quirk has been around for the maximum amount of estimated years, then we can say that the century BNHA takes place in is in the 24th century. In the early parts of said century to be more precise, which means that BNHA can take place between 2300 and 2320.

TLDR; Boku no Hero Academia takes place about 300 years in the future, but because of the sudden appearance of Quirks, technology and society were forced to stagnate in the sudden appearance of such power that humanity could hold.
