"Whats your notice period?"​

You'd be so surprised how many candidates don't know the answer to this vital question. When you are on the job market and you don't know much about what you've signed when joining your employer, review your contract and what it stipulates, because the last thing you want to do is give incorrect information not only to a recruiter, but to your possible future employer too.

The different types of notice period

So, with my knowledge, there are roughly 4 types of notice periods. You have an immediate notice period, 30 day notice period, 1 calendar month notice period and then the weird and wonderful 2 weeks to 2 months kind of notice periods.

If you're available immediately, great! but why?

We normally hear that candidates are available immediately for various reasons, such as retrenchment, resignation, conflict, ect. However, if you do have to serve a notice period, and you whisper the words you are available immediately, you may very well ruin so many spectacular opportunities. Rather be honest about these things and advice is for free - burning bridges is a big no no in the working world.

The difference between 30 days and one calendar month

People get this confused so often - & to be honest, it took me a while to understand the difference between the two, too. So, a 30 day notice period means that if you had to resign any time within any month - you would have to stay at your employer for the next 30 days (then you can be set free)! Now, a calendar month notice period is so different; if you find another job within the middle of the month, you would have to wait until the beginning of the following month to hand in your resignation. Make sense?

The weird and wonderful, random one's.

If you have an obscure notice period - its totally fine. However, if it is over 2 months, maybe just inquire if it's negotiable, because some clients do tend to need people ASAP. If it isn't, then it is still fine, just insure the person you are dealing with is well aware of your notice period.
