Wheel Bearing Replacement
How much does a wheel bearing replacement cost?A wheel bearing replacement can cost $290 to $475+ depending on the location of the bearing and whether it requires pressing in and out of the hub assembly.
Sometimes this repair can be one of the most overlooked components of the modern motor vehicle, sitting behind the road wheels allowing them to spin freely.
What is a wheel bearing?
A wheel bearing is made up of a series of ball or roller bearings located in a bearing cage.
They are kept lubricated by a special wheel bearing grease which also provides cooling capabilities to stop the bearings from overheating.
These units are located in the hub, usually behind the braking components, and the wheel then bolts up to the complete hub assembly.
What are the signs of a bad wheel bearing?
-
Rumbling noise that increases with road speed
-
Vibration through the steering wheel when driving
-
Knocking noise when going over bumps
How is a wheel bearing replaced?
-
A mechanic will identify the faulty bearing by locating the wheel experiencing issues.
-
Then they will remove the wheel and hub assembly to access the bearing, unbolt or press out the old bearing and ensure a secure fit for the new bearing.
-
Once the new bearing is in place, the mechanic will refit the hub to the vehicle, making sure to torque it correctly to manufacturer specifications.
-
Before completing the repair, the mechanic will inspect the suspension and braking components for any signs of wear or damage.
-
Finally, the mechanic will refit the wheel and conduct a thorough road test to verify that the repair has been successful.
Is it OK to drive with a bad wheel bearing?
Continuing to drive with bad wheel bearings can pose a safety issue due to excessive freeplay appearing at the wheel or the wheel bearing seizing causing the wheel to lock up.
How important is replacing your wheel bearings?
The wheel bearings allow the wheels to spin freely and keep your car moving.
If they have failed or are starting to wear out, you may notice your fuel economy rise, as it takes more effort from the engine to keep the car moving.
It’s important to have your wheel bearings replaced if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above. Keep your car in the best condition possible and get a free online quote today!
