So I keep seeing all these posts about peoples babies eating those puffs.  My LO can sit up all by herself and is interested in eating food but has no teeth.  She will be 7 months on the 24th.  When can you give them puffs without being worried about them choking?

  • aAlia_mom Posted 12-23-11Those little puffs dissolve in their mouth...so they don't need teeth to eat them. My LO is 6 months and i have given them to her. She's a bit confused on having them in her mouth since they start out hard at first. But she has eaten them with my supervision. So i would probably try them with your LO to see how she takes it.
  • member avatarZeus406 Posted 12-23-11When I started puffs I broke one puff into about 5 pieces so I knew they couldn't choke. I slowly gave larger pieces as they learned how to chew them. I started around 6 months and he has no teeth. Even if he did, babies don't chew with their front teeth so it doesn't really matter if they have teeth or not.
  • mmeredithsw1 Posted 12-23-11My son is 6.5 months old and at his 6 month well visit yesterday, our ped told us it would be good to start fingerfoods, starting with the puffs. We went to the store and got the strawberry apple flavor. He also seemed confused at first, but when we brought out the container today he practically lunged for it! Huh, my doctor told me to wait until 9 mths before begining any finger foods. Go figure, I guess they all have their own opinions.

My LO has been eating the puffs for a month. Around the time she got teeth. The puffs dissolve, so they dont need teeth

  • jJustJack21 Posted 12-23-11Our Pedi recommended we start slowly. We bought some puffs, LO really likes banana strips, and we have teething biscuits. We were told our LO needs to learn how to cough up food if he swallows to fast, it is part of the learning process. He said always supervise, never give or allow very large pieces, and not all foods make good finger foods. Stick with puffs, rice rusks, banana, avocado, roasted apples and pears...things like that. But trust your mamma instinct and if you do not think your LO is reading then no rush. :)

Mine has been eating the puffs for weeks but then again she doesn't eat pureed food at all except for apple sauce and mashed sweet potatoes. We cut all of her food into tiny pieces instead of pureeing. I dont break the puffs up either, I just put it in her mouth whole and 2 seconds later she is making noise for another one. She loves them but I dont give her too many because I dont want her to get full on them.

She likes the sweet potato puffs the best.

Grace909_ I give these ones... Gerber Veggie Puffs, Sweet Potato

JustJack21- Aren't you afraid of the teething biscuits? I see them things and I have nightmares about her biting off a big piece and choking before I can get it out.

For the last two weeks or so, I've been giving him Kix to play with on his high chair tray while I eat. Out of a handful only about four get in his mouth and they're so covered in slobber by that point they're really soft. :) Hasn't been an issue at all and he seems to like them. His pincer grip and hand to mouth coordination are also getting a LOT better with all the practice...it's pretty cool to watch.

You can tell when he actually gets one in his mouth because he gets super excited and chattery. :)
