When Does It Start Getting Lighter In The Evenings? - Metro

Everything’s feeling wintry, as the days seem impossibly cold, short – and devoid of all sunlight.

Wake up for work at 7am? It’s dark. Look out the window at 4pm? The sun’s gone in. Feel like heading out after 5pm? Oh, don’t bother leaving the house. It’s already pitch black outside.

Unfortunately, there’s little you can do about it – other than cosy up on the couch in front of Netflix.

The lighter mornings and lighter evenings will be back soon, though. But when?

When will it start getting lighter outside?

After the shortest day of the year, things will start getting lighter again.

Rejoice, for this day – December 21 – has passed.

On December 21 we had the shortest day (amount of daylight) and longest night (amount of darkness) in 365 days.

Usually, this amounts to seven hours and 49 minutes of daylight in London – though this could vary depending on where you live in the UK.

This day is officially known as the Winter Solstice across the entire Northern Hemisphere.

From December 22 onwards, we experience more daylight, meaning brighter mornings and evenings that stay lighter for longer.

It won’t be immediate, though, as things get lighter incrementally until June 21, 2022, which is the longest day of the year.

It’s called the Summer Solstice, which provides us with the most amount of daylight we’ll see in one day for the entire year.

From then on, evenings will start to get darker sooner again. And on the cycle goes.

Keep in mind that the clocks springing forward (March 27) and falling back (October 30) affect how much sunlight vs darkness we have.

Channel: UK UK 3 days ago By Brooke Davies Man charged with manslaughter after woman?s death linked to domestic abuse Officers have charged a man with manslaughter related to an ongoing investigation into the death of a woman in Bexley. Gillian Morand passed away in March 2020, aged 36. A subsequent inquest determined she had died by suicide. Following this, information came to light around allegations of domestic abuse that Gillian had previously suffered. This led to the Met undertaking further enquiries, and an investigation was launched by detectives. On Thursday, 5 March 2026, officers arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with Gillian?s death. Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, the Met has charged Seyhan Assaf, 45 (12.11.1980) of Berwick Crescent, Sidcup with manslaughter and coercive or controlling behaviour. It is alleged Gillian was abused over a significant period of time, and it is further alleged that this abuse contributed to her death. Assaf will appear at Bromley Magistrates? Court on Saturday, 7 March. Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, from the Metropolitan Police Service, said: ?This is a complex investigation with very few charges of this nature authorised across the country. ?We are supporting Gillian?s family, who ask for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time. ?I ask that anyone who was in contact with Gillian in the decade prior to her death contact us. Any information, irrespective of how insignificant it may seem, may be of considerable value.? Information can be passed to our investigation team via our Major Incident Public Portal or by calling 101 and quoting CAD number 4727/06MAR26. Samantha Yelland, Senior Crown Prosecutor in CPS London Homicide Unit said: "We have decided to prosecute Seyhan Assaf with manslaughter and controlling or coercive behaviour. "This decision comes after working closely with the Metropolitan Police as they have carried out their investigation into the death of Gillian Morand. ?Our prosecutors worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring these charges to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.? The Met continues to work closely with partners to support victim-survivors of domestic abuse. Picture: MET Police METRO

March 4, 2026. // Residents of a seaside town are at war with new parking meters - which have suffered 40k vandalism before they are even turned on. Around 30 out of 40 new machines in affluent North Berwick have been attacked - causing 38K worth of damage. They have been spray painted with graffiti, smashed and even covered in glue - before they have collected a penny. Some around the town have been defaced with stickers featuring the campaign slogan ''Resist". East Lothian Council installed the 40 new parking meters in the former royal burgh 20 miles east-northeast of Edinburgh. But weeks before the new parking laws are set to come into effect damage has been caused to the machines already. Photo released 05/03/2026
