When Does Spring Officially Begin In Upstate New York? (poll)

Although the spring equinox on March 20 marks the meteorological start of the spring season, temperatures in Upstate New York can take a little while to warm up. Sporadic snowstorms in April and May mean you can't always whip out the shorts and sundresses as soon as it says spring on the calendar.

Here are some of the more recent times when Upstate NY received an extra (occasionally record-setting) dose of wintry weather.

May 2013: Memorial Day weekend snow storm dumped three feet of snow in the Adirondacks region.

April 2013: Lake-effect snow on April 2 set a new record for snow fallen a single day during the month of April in Syracuse, with 10.5 inches. That year, Syracuse had been behind in the national competition for most snowfall in a city, but this put Syracuse back in the lead.

April 2012: On April 23, six inches of snow fell in Ithaca, setting a record for late-season snowfall.

May 2010: Syracuse received a dusting of snow on May 9, while areas of Oswego County got up to four inches as a Mother's Day gift that day.

April 2007: A nor'easter along the East Coast hit Central New York on April 16 set a record for the snowiest April 16 in Syracuse, leaving 7 inches.

This winter seems to be atoning for last year's frigid conditions with seasonally-low snowfall and mild temperatures due to El Nino. Syracuse followed up the coldest February ever in 2015, with above-average temperatures for December, January and February this winter. That trend isn't unique to Syracuse, either: It's officially the warmest winter on record for the United States, according to the NOAA.
