Easter Sunday in 2023 will take place a week earlier than 2022.

The Easter holiday is not fixed to a standard calendar date like Christmas. Every year, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday can take place across a five-week period. The state bank holidays in the UK, Good Friday and Easter Monday, are still fixed to the Christian holiday.

When is Easter 2023?

In 2023, Good Friday falls on April 7. Easter Sunday is on April 9 and Easter Monday April 10.

Why does Easter change dates every year?

In the Easter story, the Last Supper - the night before Jesus was crucified - took place on the Jewish festival of Passover. The next day, Jesus was executed. He was buried and then rose on the "third day". That third day is now marked by Easter Sunday.

In Early Christianity, Jews who converted to the religion chose to mark Easter at the same time as Passover.

The dates for Passover are linked to the first full moon after the spring equinox. So Easter takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.

Christians always celebrate Easter Sunday after Passover, so if the full moon falls on a Sunday, they push Easter back by a week to make sure. In the church calendar the Spring Equinox is March 21, so March 22 is the earliest Easter Sunday can be. April 22 is the latest date in the calendar that Easter Sunday can fall on.
