Take this as fair warning that Mother’s Day is fast approaching.

It’s the same thing every year; the scramble to find somewhere delivering flowers the night before, and the eventual turning up with a petrol station bouquet because you left it too late.

To say thanks to our mums for everything they do for us, though, it seems like a stress worth having.

Here’s everything you need to know about the day this year, so you can be prepared (or at least pretend you will).

Why is Mother’s Day always celebrated on a Sunday?

The event always falls on a Sunday because it’s technically known as ‘Mothering Sunday’ in the United Kingdom.

In this country Mother’s Day always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, the 40-day period of Christian fasting that leads up to Easter.

And the period of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the day after Pancake Day, which is also a different date each year.

Mothering Sunday is very much a religious festival in the UK, and began as a tradition of Catholics and Protestants visiting their ‘mother’ church (the one they went to as a child).

Despite this, however, plenty of people celebrate Mother’s Day without any religious association, and simply use it as a day to spoil their mum rotten.

When is Mother’s Day 2019?

Mother’s Day this year falls on Sunday, 31 March.

That leaves you approximately two whole weeks to get a present. Better get cracking or face your poor mum’s wrath!
