Simone Biles will return for Tuesday’s women’s beam final after withdrawing from her other five events at Tokyo 2020.
The four-time Olympic champion said she been suffering from “the twisties” and was taking the decision to “prioritise her mental health”.
It was unclear whether she would compete again until Monday, when the USA’s gymnastics team confirmed that “you will see two US athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow – Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!”
Lee won gold in the individual all-around final, bronze in the uneven bars, and silver in the team all-around event from which Biles withdrew after one event.

It will be Biles’ final chance at an individual medal at this summer’s Games after pulling out of the individual all-around, vault, bars and floor finals. She began the team final and performed her first vault vault, but then withdrew before her routines on the other apparatuses had taken place.
The 24-year-old, who won bronze in the beam final at Rio 2016, has since been posting videos on social media showing her struggles to land safely.
Dismount change required
In a training video posted to her Instagram story, she explained that “for anyone saying I quit, I didn’t quit, my mind and body are simply not in sync as you can see here”.

Former gymnast Katelyn Ohashi told the BBC that Biles was able to return for the beam final because she “is not doing a lot of twisting so she is a lot safer on the beam than most of the other events that she would be competing in”.
She added: “She can change her dismount because, obviously, she will be doing a lot higher difficulty than the others competing.”
