When To Go To The ER For An Allergic Reaction

Whether it’s allergies to dust mites, pet hair or bees, it is estimated that more than 50 million Americans experience various types of allergies each year. Everyone’s experience of allergies will differ and symptoms can range from a mild annoyance to a life-threatening event. Here is how to tell the difference.
What can cause allergies?
Common causes of allergies include:
- Drugs (ie. penicillin or other antibiotics)
- Indoor and outdoor allergens, such as pollen, dust, and dander (these are known to cause hay fever)
- Food allergies
- Bees
- Shellfish
Mild allergic symptoms
In these cases, when people come into contact with their allergen (the factor that causes the reaction) mild symptoms may follow:
- Hives
- Itchy skin
- Rash
- Allergic rhinitis, which may lead to symptoms such as nasal congestion or sneezing
- Watery eyes
Mild allergic reactions are localized to one part of the body. They do not spread to other parts of your body.
These symptoms can be managed at home by avoiding contact of the allergen and using medications such as antihistamines or decongestants.
Life-threatening allergic symptoms
If you experience any of the following, call 911 or attend the nearest hospital immediately.
- Difficulty breathing
- Swollen tongue
- Rash or hives that may spread around the body
- Feeling light-headed or dizzy
A severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, is a rare, life-threatening emergency. Your body’s response to the allergen is sudden and affects the whole body. You must get medical help right away.
Life-threatening reactions should also prompt long-term follow up with your doctor and ongoing management of the allergy.
