Probably going to check that it fits in the next month or so (third kid so I have to get 3 in my car...might need some of the smaller seat types we will see), and if it fits it will probably go in to stay when baby is born (my husband is a pro at putting car seats in these days so no problems there).

  • ssorcha76 Posted 07-31-12I wouldn't install it this early.  If, heaven forbid, you are in an accident with the seat in the car (even if baby isn't in it) then the seat needs to be replaced. Check that it fits your vehicle before you buy it.  Go to a carseat clinic or class to learn to install it correctly.  Both you and your husband should be there - you both need to know how to install the seat and how to buckle LO in properly.  But no - you don't actually need to install it until maybe a few days before your due date.  Even for an inexperienced person, it doesn't take long to figure out, so there's no need to do it so early.
  • member avatarStacalee Posted 07-31-12I am due the end of Aug. my hubby went away for the week on work so I made him install the seat before he left ....just in case. Advertisement | page continues below
  • member avatarlovinlife160 Posted 08-01-12I figured that since 37 weeks is full term and baby is most likely to come any time after that, we should install the car seat around 36 weeks. I don't think we actually did it that early last time, but that was my logic. LOL. Then I went to the local fire station where they do car seat inspections at any time (provided one of the firefighters who does that, is available) and had it checked out.
  • member avatarPLento Posted 08-01-12When I was pregnant we installed the car seat when I was 38 weeks just incase our daughter came early. We just installed the bases in both cars and left the seat in the house. Sure enough she wasn't early and she wasn't late. She was born on her due date
  • mmarissa_nlo Posted 08-01-12when i was pregnant i had the carseat installed a month before my due... just to make sure..(esp i was still working 2 weeks before my due) and even all the things that i needed for the hosp are in the car already..
  • member avatarnicola520 Posted 08-01-12Probably really close to baby's due date. It takes 2 seconds to install the infant car seat base!

We installed it this weekend as I am now 37 weeks, but we only left the base in as in the event (god forbid) that we got into an accident at least we wouldnt have to replace the entire car seat but the base only. The base only takes a minute to install anyways and then you can practise putting the seat in and out, but I would leave the car seat itself out of the car until you need it.

We had our base inspected along with the car seat and this is what she recommended.

    Good luck!

  • member avatar10thkingdom Posted 08-01-12We were told by the midwife to install it about 1 month before due date. Although we are planning a home birth and do not need to have the hospital check it before we leave we still want to go to a car seat clinic and have it checked out.

If you are first time parents, then even just practicing installing it is a good idea.  Read both the carseat manual and your Vehicles manual a couple of times and make sure you are comfortable with how it installs.  As second time parents who are planning a homebirth an can install a carseat blindfolded, ours is just sitting by the door, waiting for me to maybe get around to vacuuming my car before installing the base!

PS - to PP posters comment - if you are in an accident yoru car insurance will cover the replacement cost of your carseat.
