Four common causes of a chronic cough include postnasal drip, asthma, acid reflux, and use of the blood pressure medications called ACE inhibitors, such as lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) and ramipril (Altace). Unless you are taking an ACE inhibitor, the underlying cause of a chronic cough may be difficult to diagnose based on symptoms alone. Therefore, your doctor may recommend a trial of medication targeting the suspected cause to see if the cough improves.
