The much anticipated 17-year periodical cicada emergence began this weekend across Central PA. Adult cicadas have been spotted at Gifford Pinchot, Kings Gap, and Ski Roundtop. Camp Hill, Stewartstown, and Mt. Gretna have also reported sightings. The cicadas emerge from the ground at night starting around sunset when the soil 8 inches deep hits 64 degrees. They climb up anything vertical and break out of their nymph shell to reveal their final, winged adult form.
