When Will 'Free Guy' Be On Disney+? What We Know ... - Decider

If you’re hoping to watch Ryan Reynolds make fun of video games from the comfort of your own home—without dropping $20 on a Ryan Reynolds movie—then you’re going to have to wait a little longer.

Free Guy, which opened in theaters back in August, is still not streaming on Disney+, despite the fact that it is a Disney film. What gives?

It’s a shame, because it seems like the perfect movie to watch on streaming. Reynolds stars as Guy, a non-player character in a video game who gains awareness. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film received generally positive reviews from critics, who found the film silly but fun. And you can’t beat the cast: Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi also star in the film.

In other words, the perfect film to stream for free on Disney+. So when the heck can subscribers expect Free Guy to release on Disney+?

IS FREE GUY COMING TO DISNEY PLUS? FREE GUY DISNEY PLUS RELEASE:

Unfortunately, there is not yet a Disney Plus release date for Free Guy, and it will likely be a bit before Free Guy hits Disney+. In fact, the movie will be on HBO before it is on Disney+.

Free Guy is a Disney film and will be presumably come to Disney+ eventually, however, it’s a tad complicated, because the film was sold and put into production under 20th Century Fox, before Fox was sold to Disney. Free Guy is one of the first Fox films to release under Disney’s new production arm, 20th Century Studios.

Because of this, Free Guy falls under a deal that 20th Century Fox and WarnerMedia had that sends Fox’s theatrical releases to HBO for the film’s “Pay 1 window.” (The “pay 1 window” is the period in which rights for a film are available to premium cable networks like HBO, usually 6 to 9 months after it debuts in theaters.) This would mean that Free Guy would be on HBO sometime around February 2022 to March 2022, and then on Disney+ after that.

In other words, Free Guy will be on Disney+ someday, but not anytime soon.

WHERE TO STREAM FREE GUY:

While you cannot currently watch Free Guy on Disney+, the good news is that the movie is now available on digital. That means you can still stream Free Guy at home by purchasing the film on a digital platform like Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and more.

Free Guy costs $19.99 to buy in 4K. That’s no doubt a high price tag, but the good news is that, unlike a rental, once you buy the film it’s yours to watch for as long as and as many times as you like. Free Guy is not currently available to rent at this time.
