Based on the true story of the oldest public hospital in the United States, New Amsterdam follows director, Dr. Max Goodwin (played by Ryan Eggold), as he risks everything to provide the best possible medical care to all patients. As of this writing, the show is now in its fifth (and final) season, and we're not crying, you are.

Season 5 of the beloved NBC procedural drama kicked off on Sept. 20 and it started out with a bang. Now that the final chapter is well underway, viewers have questions that need answers.

Sadly, we'll have to wait until 2023 to see the highly anticipated series finale. Following the premiere of the midseason finale, New Amsterdam will go on an extended hiatus. So, when can viewers expect Max and company to return from fall break? Here's what we know!

When does Season 5 of 'New Amsterdam' return from fall break? Details on the midseason finale!

After Season 5, Episode 9 — entitled "The Empty Spaces" — airs on Tuesday, Nov. 22, New Amsterdam will go off-air for the rest of the year. The description for the midseason finale teases that "Max takes a chance with Wilder and learns a hard truth," while "Reynolds gets creative to help a prospective mother in need," and Iggy makes a major decision.

Promos for the episode tease chaos at Bellevue Hospital, though, we'll have to wait a few weeks to see Season 5's inevitable conclusion.

While it's never fun to wait for a series you love to return (even during notoriously shorter midseason breaks) the wait is made a little easier knowing that all of our burning questions will be answered on Tuesday, Jan. 3, when New Amsterdam returns from its holiday hiatus.

Showrunners previously announced that Season 5 — which is only half as long as Season 4 — will air its two-hour finale on Tuesday, Jan. 17. But how many episodes are in Season 5 of New Amsterdam? Read on to find out!

How many episodes are in Season 5 of 'New Amsterdam'?

Season 1 of New Amsterdam made its debut on NBC with a total of 22 episodes. The following season was shorter, with only 18 episodes. While Season 3 was only 14 episodes, Season 4 of New Amsterdam returned with 22 episodes. In the show's final season, showrunners switched things up, yet again.

Season 5 of New Amsterdam will only feature 13 episodes.

Back in 2020, NBC announced that New Amsterdam had been renewed for three seasons through 2023. Alas, the show's time on the air has come to an end.

The midseason finale of New Amsterdam airs Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 10 p.m. EST on NBC. New Amsterdam returns with the remaining episodes of Season 5 on Tuesday, Jan. 3, during its regularly scheduled time slot.
