Trying to keep the lawn under control throughout the spring and summer months can be a bit of a chore.

At the height of the heatwave, many of our garden carpets of green turned brown.

But they still needed mowing.

Now, with the nights drawing in and the temperatures dropping, it's almost time to put the lawnmower away in the garage or shed and completely forget about it until next spring.

So, when is the ideal time to stop mowing the lawn?

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, mowing is typically carried out between March and October.

On average, it advises people to mow twice weekly in the summer months and then just once a week over the spring and autumn.

Throughout the winter the charity explains that mowing is "usually not necessary, unless the weather is mild and the grass is still growing".

In these circumstances it is advised that you mow occasionally with a high cut setting but "do not attempt to do this if the ground conditions are very soft or frozen, or during spells of cold, drying winds".

Joel Tanti, owner of Lawn Care Wales, said he believed that if the grass continued to grow then it should be kept trimmed.

He said: "If it's growing, just keep cutting it.

"Make sure the ground is nice and dry to cut it but don't cut below two degrees celsiuis."

How should I leave my lawn for the winter?

Mr Tanti advised: "If you're doing a final cut then make sure you get it nice and short to about two inches long.

"Apply moss treatment in the winter as it makes the grass greener and stops any moss creeping in.

"Also, scarification, which is the mechanical removal of debris from the lawn. We tend to do this in September or October, sometimes in November.

"Aeration allows water and air into the lawn to help prevent it from being boggy."

The Royal Horticultural Society advises: "Never mow wet or frosty grass, as this can damage the turf and compact the soil.

"Wait until later in the day when the lawn has dried out or defrosted, or postpone mowing to another day."

The charity advises to mow up to 40mm (1.5 inches) in the spring and autumn seasons.
