Subarus are made at two automotive manufacturing plants. One plant, Subaru-chō, is located in Gunma, Japan, about 2 hours north of Tokyo, and the other is in Lafayette, Indiana. The Japan site, the main plant, produces the Subaru BRZ, XV Subaru Crosstrek, Subaru Ascent, Impreza, WRX, STi and Subaru Forester models. At the Subaru of America site, Subaru produces the Subaru Legacy sedan, and the Subaru Outback and Tribeca crossovers. Fuji Heavy Industries, a Japanese company, is the parent Japanese automaker company for the Subaru Corporation. Before their first car, and the millions of subarus manufactured after, the Gunma prefecture had an oizumi plant that made planes in the Ota north.

Planned Changes

Subaru announced plans in 2013 to invest $400 million in its USA plant to begin manufacturing the Impreza Subaru models there with their signature boxer engines and all-wheel drive (AWD). Production of these Subaru cars is slated to start there in 2016 for the American market. The Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. (SIA) manufacturing facility currently builds 200,000 Subaru vehicles a year. The investment in the plant will increase capacity to 300,000 Subarus made in North America each year. The facility employs approximately 3,600 North American workers and will add 900 more to work on the Subaru Impreza. In addition, the Subaru facility manufactures the Camry sedan for Toyota. The plant also might begin building the Crosstrek and the WRX once expansion is complete.
