Ever wonder where spiders go in the winter? Do they die? Do they hibernate? Do they just hide somewhere – more specifically in your house?

As spiders are cold blooded, spider eggs can’t survive being frozen, so these arachnids have come up with various ways to stay alive during the cold winter months.

Many spiders prepare for the winter by laying their eggs in autumn.

These creatures lay their eggs inside a silk egg sac, which is usually hidden in a web, affixed to a surface, or carried by the female.

Spiders may produce multiple egg sacs, each containing up to several hundred eggs. The egg sac is made from woven silk, and is often roughly the same size as the spider.

 

 

However, many of these sacs do not survive the winter months, though some spiders supply their eggs a nice warm sac to survive in until spring.

After those eggs hatch, little baby spiderlings spend the winter in the egg sacs to keep warm in order to help them survive the harsh conditions.

Interestingly, some spiders prepare for the winter by weaving a web under loose bark or buildings where they are protected from the cold.

Spiders can also be found trying to hibernate in rock piles or piles of leaves.

They may be found in places like garages, sheds, or attics where they can remain warm and active.

They like to prey on other insects hibernating themselves.
