The Patriots actually play in Foxborough, Mass. Here’s why they’re called ‘New England’

They’re named for a region, not a city or state.

The New England Patriots play their home games in Foxborough, Mass. Their home field is Gillette Stadium, which is about a 45-minute drive from the center of Boston.

When it was founded in 1960, the team was called the Boston Patriots. It kept the “Boston” label through its first decade of play. The American Football League merged with the National Football League in 1970, and the franchise changed its name to the “New England Patriots” a year later to position itself as the representative of an entire region.

And the Patriots do have fans from all over. You’ve probably got Patriots fan friends who aren’t from the city of Boston, right?

When they were called the Boston Patriots, the Patriots had four different home fields, all at various points on the map in and around Boston before heading to Foxborough. They played at Boston University’s Nickerson Field (1960-62) and the Red Sox’s Fenway Park (1963-68). They played at Boston College’s Alumni Field in Chestnut Hill in 1969 and then at Harvard Stadium in the neighborhood of Allston in 1970. They then spent the next three decades at Foxboro Stadium and opened nearby Gillette Stadium in 2002.

(Another thing: Foxborough is often spelled Foxboro.)

New England is the term used for a region of six Northeastern states: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Maine. The Patriots are the most northeastern team in the NFL, and they can stake a legitimate claim to being the team of that part of the country.

The Patriots are one of two regionally named franchises in the NFL. The other is the Carolina Panthers, who play in Charlotte but consider themselves the team of both Carolinas. The league’s other 30 teams are named for cities or states, with the partial exception of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who play in Tampa.

Foxborough is south of Boston, between that city and Providence.

The natural driving route between Boston and Providence takes you along Interstate 95, the same road that keeps going southbound through New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, the Carolinas, and all the way to South Florida. Foxborough is one of the many stops along the same highway:

The Patriots were bad when they were from “Boston.”

They had six losing seasons in 10 years under that original name. They never won the AFL’s championship, and they made their name change after a 2-10 season in 1970. (The closest they got to a title was losing 51-10 to the San Diego Chargers in the AFL Championship at the end of the 1963 season.)

The franchise stayed bad, for the most part, until new coach Bill Parcells started moving them in the right direction in the 1990s. They have taken off since 2000, when they hired Bill Belichick as their head coach. Belichick drafted quarterback Tom Brady in the sixth round of the 2000 draft, and the two have gone on to win five Super Bowls together as the most successful quarterback-coach duo in NFL history.

If they can beat the Eagles on Sunday, the Patriots will tie the Steelers for the most Super Bowl championships won in history: six.
