Where Far Cry 6 Takes Place - Screen Rant

Far Cry 6's launch date is still up in the air - it was originally supposed to ship in February 2021, but like many AAA games has experienced delays from the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result many other details about Far Cry 6 are still under wraps, and players still don't know much about the game's protagonist short of their name. One of the few things people do have a general sense of is the product's setting, and even then there's still plenty left to learn.

Far Cry 6 players will assume the role of Dani Rojas, a guerilla fighting against the rule of an autocratic leader named Antón Castillo. Castillo, as many gamers will be aware, is played by Giancarlo Esposito - he's all over Far Cry 6's marketing, famous for shows like Breaking Bad and movies such as Do the Right Thing. To win, the player will have to resort to makeshift weapons and/or recruit some companions - including the fuzzy variety.

Ubisoft explains that Far Cry 6 is set on Yara, a fictional island in the Caribbean. The location is a less-than-subtle reference to Cuba, which continues to be under the thumb of a communist regime and for decades was led by a single charismatic ruler, Fidel Castro, who briefly passed the baton to his brother Raúl before dying. A similar familial link is repeated in the game in the form of Castillo's son Diego, though Diego is reluctant to take on his father's authority.

How Far Cry 6's Setting Could Influence Its Plot

Far Cry 6's trailers and other material seem to draw parallels to Central and South America, where protests and revolutions helped to push out other dictators like Chile's Augusto Pinochet. Ubisoft could potentially choose to spice up Far Cry 6's plot with American involvement - the U.S. government infamously backed a number of right-wing coups in the Americas, and unsuccessfully fostered rebellion in Cuba. The CIA tried many times to assassinate or disgrace Castro - one plot attempt involved an exploding cigar.

More information about Far Cry 6 is likely to come during an Ubisoft Forward event scheduled for June 12. A precise release date is improbable, but since the publisher has been extremely quiet about the game for almost a year, it will probably have to show something to reassure both gamers and its financial backers that work is continuing.
