The story is mainly focused on the character Private First Class Paul Berlin who was just deployed on the war zone. He lives the story with fear because one soldier died before because he was scared to death. This is an excellent example of the war in Vietnam, where one second is hot and the other second it's raining, and where the environment is unpredictable. This story shows us how each soldier felt during this harsh times. Private First Class Paul Berlin goes through and incident that scarred him for life. He was constantly scared from the moment he first arrived. His character doesn't change through the story since he is always afraid. The story tells the reader how 30 years ago, soldiers felt during war. You can find fear, like soldiers were first deployed or when they didn't knew what to do on dangerous locations. Courage, like when they put the lives of others after theirs, and determination in this story and unprediction where the soldiers can't know what's happening next. There is this young man named Paul Berlin. He is sent to one of the most catastrophic wars known to man, the Vietnam War. He had no experience at all. If it wasn't enough, he witnessed a shocking death in one of his fellow teammates. Billi Boy Watkins stepped on a trip mine, he died from a heart attack later on. Paul must fight his own fears and come the true man that he is. Would he be able to get over his own fears? There are 3 major themes in this story. Fear, Courage, and Determination. Paul suffers major fear in about every particle of this short story. Fear and courage are taken by the hand, so Paul can get over his fear, he needs to have the courage to keep fighting without looking back. What is the word for a person that is positive and always straight forward? exactly, determined. He was determined for everything that came in his path. Including wars. I would recommend this story for the great values it promotes; it is also very inspirational, you can really do anything you achieve to just by having the courage to do it.Rafael Peralta 5 reviewsFollowFollowApril 4, 2016The story of Tim Obrien focus on the stress of combat of the soldiers during the Viatnam War. We are introduce to the character Private First Class Paul Berlin who is just introduce to the battlefield. He lives the story with fear because one soldier die before because he was scare to death. It tells you what a soldier felt during war. You can find fear, what soldiers felt when they where drafted to war. Courage, how the soliders overcome their situation and etermination in this story. Where have you gone, Billy Boy, Billy Boy, Oh, where have you gone charming Billy?[image error] Karina Del Real Muñoz1 reviewFollowFollowJanuary 19, 2015To be completely honest, I am only here because of my lit assignment. But I did really like this short story. This story highlights fear, anxiety and uncertainty in the stages of war. Here Private First Class Paul Berlin is our main character who is in Vietnam for his first day in the war. He is trying to avoid reality and focus on what used makes him fearful as a child and not now as an adult. He recalls being with his dad and the only fears he had were the boogeyman and ghosts. He also uses other tactics like pretending he's not a soldier and that he is a little boy with his dad by the campfire. I really adore the way this story is written and delivered to the readers. The author Tim O'Brien did an excellent job expressing delivering the message that even when in a position of fear, you can make something funny out of a petrifying situation.Profile Image for Fernando Arturo.Fernando Arturo5 reviewsFollowFollowApril 4, 2016In my opinion, this story is very bland and simple. It's setting isn't used to it's fullest and has a main character that hardly changes througout the story. The story follows Paul Berlín as he goes through his first time in war after finding out about the death of one of the other soldiers in his platoon, not knowing about the situation of his death. He has to deal with the fear and anxiety that the war has caused him.The only character we know anything about is Paul. Since it's his first time in a war, he is very nervous and scared of his surroundings, his dreams being the only things that make him feel even slightly safe. So, to end this review, the story is simple, most of the characters and bland and simple, with only the main character having any personality, and the setting isn't used to it's full potential.Lexy9 reviews2 followersFollowFollowDecember 14, 2016confusing was not interesting didn't necessary care for it Profile Image for Faithreading18.Faithreading1870 reviewsFollowFollowReadJanuary 24, 2023•••Read for school•••Displaying 1 - 10 of 10 reviews
