Known as the Southern Gate of the United States, the city of El Paso is located on the Rio Grande in the southwestern corner of the state of Texas. El Paso covers an area of about 250 square miles, and its southern border follows the international boundary between the United States and Mexico.

The city’s southern edge is defined by the Rio Grande, which runs through El Paso from west to east, along with sections of the border wall. The large Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez lies on the opposite side of the river, and together the two cities form a large cross-border metropolitan area.

El Paso has a rich history, a well-developed trade and industrial base, an advanced education system, and a vibrant cultural scene. The city is located about 300 miles east of Tucson, a major city in southern Arizona. Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, is roughly 380 miles northeast of El Paso, while Austin, the capital of Texas, is about 575 miles to the east. Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, is located approximately 320 miles north of El Paso.

Central districts of El Paso include Sunset Heights, Union Plaza, Chihuahuita, Magoffin, El Segundo Barrio, and others. Some of the largest neighborhoods and surrounding communities include Anapra, Sunland Park, Homestead Meadows South, Socorro, Horizon City, Agua Dulce, and nearby areas. El Paso International Airport is located about 6 miles northeast of downtown.
