c_huynh32 Hi everyone! I am in the market for a Highlander. So I was wondering if anyone here knows where it is built? Reason I am asking because I don't want my vehicle to be made in Mexico!! Only North America (USA or Canada) or Japan! I haven't test drove it yet. Because I am just waiting for a month or 2 to let some of the "bugs" work out before buying a newly built vehicle from top to bottom. Reason I am asking because I don't want my vehicle to be made in Mexico!! Only North America (USA or Canada) or Japan! I haven't test drove it yet. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Mar 2, 2020 All Highlanders (gas and hybrid) sold in North America are assembled in Princeton, Indiana, US. Production for the gas version started there in 2009, and the hybrid in 2014. #3 · Mar 2, 2020 OP couldn't google it? Could be worse now that it could be made in China lol #4 · Mar 2, 2020 I think by a month or two what you really mean is a year or two. New model bugs are not fixed that quickly. #5 · Mar 2, 2020 Mexico is in North America. As noted above, the HL final assembly is in Indiana. The 8-speed transmission is made in Buffalo, West Virginia. I believe the engine is also made in West Virginia, but not 100% sure. #6 · Mar 2, 2020 So what is wrong with cars made in Mexico? Just guessing, but there is a real good chance that brown people in Princeton, Indiana work in the Toyota assembly plants. #7 · Mar 2, 2020 I believe Scotty Kilmer is scarying everyone with his vids. Tacomas have been made in Mexico since 2015 or so, but Toyota going to be making seemingly all Tacos there. And Scotty is the same guy who probably pissed off the workers working in Kentucky, probably saying that the Japan made ones were better than theirs (well, that could be true to some extent). 1 Reply #8 · Mar 2, 2020 Toyota quality is Toyota quality, regardless of where it's made. They all adhere and go through Toyota's quality standard. Ask Alexa. ? #9 · Mar 2, 2020 Cavalier begs to differ (I know its not a Toyota but blanketed statements are a slippery slope, regardless of brand), especially if something like this wears the butterfly. Just sayin' 293987 0 Reply #10 · Mar 3, 2020 Our 2107 Yaris iA wears the insignia proudly too, but the heart is not Toyota. I do not care where it was assembled, it was INEXPENSIVE, meets our requirements. ALL cars (yeep another blanket statement) have parts made all over our wonderful planet. Therefore ,no matter were final assembly is, your car is a Heinz 57 of parts origin. It is not like your car has food miles....... #11 · Mar 4, 2020 I would feel a lot better about my incoming Highlander Hybrid if it were made in Japan, as opposed to Indiana. But it is what it is. #12 · Mar 4, 2020 why? WHY? 1 Reply #13 · Mar 4, 2020 Maybe because my current Prius and Lexus ES were made in Japan and both have over 100k problem-free miles. My Outback made in Indiana and my Accord made in Ohio and my Corolla made in California have been far from problem free. #16 · Mar 4, 2020 Let’s only count Toyotas. What has been so wrong with your Corolla???? While I know zero about Hondas, I can bet your Subaru needed head gaskets at say 150k. Maybe a failed seal here or there. And if you were really bad and did not service the cam drive parts and water pump, it probably took a huge crap sometime. All cars want their wear items around the time the book says to. Your Prius takes abuse, the 08 my dad has only has needed wear items. Lexi have a hard time in general dying and simply must be past on because you are sick of looking at it... 0 Reply #15 · Mar 4, 2020 No, it wouldn't make me feel better since I would be dropping 2k a year more on gas. I'm not the first person in history to think (true or not) that vehicles made in Japan are more reliable! #17 · Mar 4, 2020 That is generally not true if the same company designed the vehicle and designed the manufacturing and testing procedures. There are a lot of automated procedures when assembling a vehicle. 0 Reply #18 · Mar 4, 2020 U can tell by the serial number. If it starts with a 3, it's made in Mexico. If it starts with a 1 it's made in the USA, if it starts with a 5 or 4 I believe it's made in USA but not Detroit. 2 is Canada. J is of course Japan. It's been a while since I've heard this but my dad was a car salesman I learn it from him. I'm 100% positive on all I listed except the 4 and 5. I pretty sure 4 is the right one unless 5 is too. #19 · Mar 4, 2020 Originally, 1 was reserved for US owned automakers with final assembly in the USA, and 4 and 5 for foreign automakers with final assembly in the USA. But there are now some exceptions to that rule, so all one can say for sure is that 1,4, and 5 are assembled in the USA.1 is "mostly" for GM, Ford, and Chrysler (but there are some minor exceptions). Chrysler is now part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (usually called FCA). FCA corporate headquarters is in the Netherlands, and the financial headquarters are in London, both for tax purposes. Fiat was an Italian company before the merger. But I believe that the Chrysler brands still use 1 if final assembly is in the USA. "Final Assembly" is probably a better term rather than "made in" because engines, transmissions, and other major parts may be made in a different country than vehicle final assembly country. For vehicles sold in the USA, the window sticker mentions the percentage of USA content for the parts that go into the final assembly. Up until a few years ago, the 8-speed transmissions for the Toyota HL and Sienna (both with final assembly in Indiana) were made in Japan, but are now made in West Virginia. Show more replies 1 Reply #25 · Mar 6, 2020 I remember my '82 corolla was born in Japan. I think that was the first and last toyota I have bought made there. By the time I replaced it in '90 with a camry they were being made in America. #26 · Mar 6, 2020 I had a 98 Camry V6 made in Japan. I believe that they were also made in the USA, but the V6 models supplied to dealers in the Western US were made in Japan. Show more replies 0 Reply #29 · Mar 9, 2020 I have had many "Japanese" cars in my life - Nissan, Acura, Honda, Toyota, Lexus. Nissans are the worst and full of problems from day 1. Honda was great, lasted me 150K trouble-free, if I don't count drive shafts. Acuras were good, but the only issue they had was the transmission and, guess what, it was made in Japan. First Acura TL (1999) was made in Japan fully and shipped here. The price was about 36K. Year after, they started assembling them in the US and the price dropped about 8K, but the quality was still exactly the same. But the transmission was and still is a problem, 20 years later - my body just traded-in a 2016 TL with a bad transmission that they did not know how to fix and it only had 50K miles. Toyota and Lexus were the most reliable ones we ever had. So, it does not matter where the car is assembled or where the parts are made, it's all about the process and dedication to high quality. #30 · Mar 9, 2020 My current 2nd generation Highlander was built in Japan. It's been the most reliable vehicle I've owned. #32 · Mar 17, 2021 Didn't you guys ever watch the movie "Gung-Ho"? en.wikipedia.org
