It was founded by Jonathan Jessup in 1863. It is considered the central town of the state, therefore, it is famous for its numerous wholesale markets and food storage places. It has a total area of 6.05 sq mi (15.68 km2). Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1 serve the area. Actress DeWanda Wise was born in Jessup.
