With the news that Cristiano Ronaldo is set to sign for Juventus, a new level attention has been focused on the already world-renowned, historic club.

The 33-year-old is going to cost the Italian champions €105 million (£92.7m) and has agreed a salary of €30m (£26.4m) per season.

Juventus have won the last seven Serie A titles and 34 in total but their name does cause some confusion among football fans as it is not the name of the city where they are based.

So where are Juventus based and where did they get their name from?

Where is Juventus?

Juventus are based in the Italian city of Turin, which you can see in the map above, is in the north-west of the country.

It is the fourth biggest city in Italy with a population of around 880,000 and was the first capital city of the country from 1861-1865.

Turin is 327 miles from Rome, 661 miles from Ronaldo’s current home in Madrid and 78 miles west of Milan.

Why are Juventus called Juventus?

The story goes that a group of school boys at the ‘Massimo D’Azeglio’ high school in Turin founded the club back in 1897.

The game was recently imported from England and with their school specialising in classical studies they looked to Latin for inspiration for their moniker.

‘Iuventus’ means ‘youth’ in Latin and that is why they went for ‘Sport-Club Juventus’ as their first name.

The Juventus website even goes as far as saying the boys came up with the name specifically on a bench on Corso Re Umberto – one of Turin’s most famous streets.

Why are Juventus called The Old Lady?

One of a number of nicknames the club possess is ‘The Old Lady’ which stems from some fairly lame ideas, to be honest.

The ‘old’ bit is based on the club being named after the word for ‘youth’ despite being one of the oldest clubs in Italy.

It is a bit of a pun, but you will be forgiven for not laughing out loud at that one.

‘Lady’ derives from male fans passionately referring to the club like it was their other half.

The name came about back in the 1930s.
