Where is Netflix's Anne with an E filmed? How town transforms for the series

The adaptation is back for series two, which may have left you wondering where the show is set

Anne with an E took us all by surprise last year when it dropped on Netflix.

The adaptation of a much loved classic gave us a darker interpretation of L.M. Montgomery's novel.

‌

The actual book is set is Avonlea and Green Gables Farm in the 1890s in Canada, on Prince Edward Island.

‌

The book, released in 1908, is a coming-of-age tale with Anne, an imaginative - and clumsy - orphan.

Anne (played by Amybeth McNulty) was praised for her take on the role when the first series dropped on Netflix last year.

Now the show returns with a second series showing her adapting to living with the Cuthberts.

Where is Anne with an E set?

The series shows off stunning countryside and the “Shimmering Lake of Lights” with the Lady of the Lake to waves crashing over the shore, but where is it shot?

Executive producer Miranda de Pencier has spoken about filming in Ontario.

‌

"It was really wonderful to be able to feed the Island into the souls of our actors and our key crew so that we could bring that knowledge to the production every day here in Ontario," she told CBC.

The farm Green Gables is based on a real life location on Prince Edward Island - where the scenes were filmed.

It’s now home to a historic site in the Cavendish area near the centre of the island, towards the northern coast.

The farm was owned by Montgomery’s cousins, the MacNeil family so it’s no surprise it inspired the author to include it in her story.

The farm was made a historic site in 1985 and is part of the island’s national park.

‌

Fans still visit to take photos and walk in Montgomery’s - and Anne’s - footsteps.

Not everything was shot here though, some of the filming took place on a more reclusive island off the coast.

Logistics got in the way and the team had to film elsewhere. The 200 cast and crew were unable to trek to Prince Edward Island for shoots partly down to cost.

Filming in Ontario the team re-created the PEI look using red bricks. The bricks were pulverised to change the roads in downtown Millbrook, Ontario to make it authentic.

They also used a farmhouse in Pickering, Ontario, that looked like Green Gables - the roof was replaced, however, so it’s almost identical.
