Where Is Netflix's Black Summer Filmed? - Metro

If you’re a big fan of The Walking Dead and Z Nation, you’ll likely enjoy Netflix’s Black Summer.

The zombie apocalypse show starring Jaime King as Rose has received the stamp of approval from the master of horror himself, Stephen King, who tweeted ‘showrunners could learn a lot from this’.

The first episode begins with Rose frantically telling her daughter to pack her bag so that they can leave the house and head to the military convoy down the road and escape their town.

There’s palpable tension, but viewers will have to wait a while before learning exactly why they are on the run (hint: zombies).

Where is the Netflix show Black Summer filmed?

The characters are constantly on the move, either looking for Rose’s daughter or escaping death, so it made sense for Netflix to spread out its filming locations.

Filming began in July 2018 and finished in September that same year and primarily took place in Calgary, Canada.

It’s the largest city in the province of Alberta and is also where the 1988 Winter Olympic Games were held.

Some of the city’s famous spots featured in Black Summer include the Calgary Tower and Queen Elizabeth School. During episode two, we get a view of the River Avenue Bridge over Bow River, Cochrane, a bridge that can also be seen in Sky Atlantic’s Tinstar.

Other Alberta locations used were Irricana and Bieseker, where according to Three Hills Capital, a car chase was filmed.

What is Black Summer about?

Throughout the chaos at the start of the series, Rose is separated from her daughter and begs a US army officer named Spears (Justin Chu Chary) for help in finding her.

Black Summer is the prequel to Z Nation, set at the very beginning of the zombie apocalypse and there are eight episodes to enjoy.

For those who haven’t watched it yet, we won’t spoil the fun but expect gruesome scenes and plenty of blood and guts.

‘Black Summer is before the apocalypse got weird and was just scary,’ showrunner Karl Schaefer said in a speech at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

‘No character from Z Nation appears in Black Summer on Netflix.’

‘It’s interesting, in the series that I’m producing for Netflix, Black Summer, we’ve taken a completely different approach in that it’s much more like a chapter in a book,’ producer and director Jodi Linstock said in an interview with Mandy News.

‘You don’t necessarily do the cliffhangers on a commercial break – it’s keeping you going so that you’ve got to binge it. Black Summer in its inception was originally thought of as a spin off of Z Nation but it’s not exactly.

‘Black Summer is referred to in Z Nation as the summer where everything went to hell, so that is where Black Summer picks up.’

As for whether Black Summer will be renewed for a second season, here’s what we know so far.
