Where Is Pam & Tommy's Rand Gauthier Now? - Digital Spy

Disney+ and Hulu's new series Pam and Tommy has everything – sex, drugs and rock'n'roll… More than anything, it's based around the sex.

Rand Gauthier, played by Seth Rogen in the series, is a disgruntled electrician whose one decision for revenge would have a decades-long impact on the people involved. Whatever you think of that sex tape, you wouldn't have known about it at all if it wasn't for Gauthier.

But how did this relative nobody in the two central celebrities' world even get hold of the tape, and where the hell is he now after he unleashed it onto the world back in 1995?

Well… turns out the now 65-year-old is still in California, growing marijuana and living a pretty normal life in the suburb of Santa Rosa.

He also has a somewhat rose-tinted vision of the tape, telling Rolling Stone back in 2014 he was glad that he had contributed something to the world.

Of the tape itself and its contents, he said: "It was cute. They're in love and a couple and they're just having fun with each other, and I think that's great.

"I'm jealous. I wish I had something like that."

Apart from the Rolling Stone interview, Gauthier has remained largely removed from the chaos that he created on the fateful night back in the mid-'90s, with minimal interviews about his involvement and his feelings on what happened as it spiralled out of his control. There are also no publicly available photos of him.

Gaultier claims he still sometimes tells people he's the person that stole the tape, but no one really believes him.

How did Rand Gauthier get the Pam and Tommy sex tape?

Originally finding work refurbishing Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's marital home, he broke in and stole their safe after Lee pointed a shotgun at his face.

Initially, Gauthier's intention was purely to pawn any goods inside the safe in order to claim back the $20,000 of unpaid work he had done for the couple. But among the goods he found the Hi8 camcorder tape of their honeymoon, and his greed and desire for revenge got the better of him.

Gauthier claims the shotgun incident "messed with his head", and he intended to knock Lee down a peg or two with the sale of the sex tape, but rather than achieve this, he instead did nothing but solidify Lee's status as the ultimate rock star, with his large penis becoming worldwide news.

Arguably, it was Anderson who took the brunt of the negativity, with the case being one of the most prominent public slut-shaming moments in all of celebrity history. This despite the fact that the video (stolen video) showed her having consensual sex with her husband in the privacy of their own boat while on their honeymoon.

Gauthier's heist plan seemed foolproof. After spending weeks at the luxury, three-floor Malibu mansion, he was aware of the lay of the land. Hell, he'd even installed the security cameras himself, so he knew their weaknesses and the blindspots that were there.

Months after being fired from the renovation project, Gauthier insists to this day he acted alone, targeting the safe he knew was hidden in Lee's recording studio, a tricked-out garage on the bottom floor of the house. The position of the safe meant an easy in and easy out.

In October that year, he hopped the fence, disabled the cameras, and broke into the home of the sleeping Baywatch and Mötley Crüe pair at around 3am. Gauthier wore a white fur rug on his back to make it look like he was the family dog, and then simply wheeled the safe out of the home, into his truck and away.

His initial hope was to pawn the guns and jewellery he was aware were in the safe. But then he found the now infamous honeymoon tape and recruited friends in the porn industry to help distribute it.

Gauthier had previously worked in porn in the late 1980s and had maintained contact with the producers. It was there he found Milton Ingley, who agreed to help him sell the red hot tape at $59.95 a pop on the internet. They had initially tried to sell it to porn creators, including the infamous Ron Jeremy, but they refused to touch it without Lee and Anderson signing a release.

They eventually found themselves a backer who gave them $50,000 to get the project started, on the implication the loan would be returned with a cut of the profits.

But then other bootleggers started copying and selling the tape after they'd bought it themselves, and the pair's hopes of millions quickly disappeared. By this point, Gauthier and Ingley had created dozens of the tapes and had been living a decadent lifestyle of champagne and cocaine.

It took Lee and Anderson more than two months to even notice the safe was missing, by which point tabloids had become aware of it, and the tape was beginning to gain notoriety around the world. Even as they tried to stop it, the train had already left the station with no one having control over it anymore.

A private investigator eventually tracked Gauthier down, and Lee's security manager, a former Hells Angel, sent the biker gang over to the studio to get the tape back several times. Their persistent efforts left Gauthier paranoid and he started sleeping on other people's couches and moving around in a bid to fall off the grid.

The eventual fallout left him no better off than when he started. Disillusioned by the porn industry, he made the decision to remove himself from the world and restarted his work as an electrician.

He now acknowledges that he was "the lowest on the totem pole" in terms of the monetisation of the tape.
