On the Apple menu, go to System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) and click Security & Privacy. Then select Microphone and click the checkbox next to the app to allow it permission to use the mic.

Uncheck an app when you don’t want to use it with the mic anymore. Some apps block other apps from using the mic after installing. You may need to check the setting after any new app installations.

You can test the mic using an in-built app like QuickTime Player. You simply say something with the volume turned up. Download the recording and play it back. The mic works if you hear yourself from the MacBook Air speakers.

On a MacBook Air, it is possible to increase or reduce the mic volume for each app. Let’s look at how you can optimize your mic on the MacBook Air.

• Adjust volume settings – Choose System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above), click on Sound and select Input. You can change the volume output of the mic by dragging the slider to the right or left. Sliding to the right makes the mic more sensitive to sound. You tick the Ambient Noise Reduction checkbox to help reduce background noises. Clicking the volume icon on the menu bar opens a pop-up window where you can adjust the mic volume.

• Remove obstacles – With the 2020 MacBook Air and older versions, the mic can be affected by obstacles placed next to the device. Removing the case can improve the mic’s sound collection. This is unnecessary with the 2022 model as the mic and speakers are between the keyboard and display.

• Do the mic test – Open a new audio recording in QuickTime Play and say or sing something. You can hear how it all sounds by playing back the audio and making adjustments, as explained above.

• Position your device – Having your MacBook Air closer to you will make your voice louder, but the device should not be too close as the sound can become distorted. The gap should be far enough for you to be seen for video calls but close enough for your voice to project clearly.

• Clean your device – Sometimes, you just need to clean your MacBook Air, and the mic output improves. Switch the device off before beginning, and be sure to keep water away from the ports. Use only recommended products like a clean, lint-free cloth.

• Use a USB microphone – The internal microphone on the MacBook Air works perfectly but if you need that little bit extra for your project, use an external USB microphone. A USB microphone has adjustable settings like an internal microphone, but it allows you to move it around as you see fit.
