Where Should I Place My NETGEAR Wi-Fi Range Extender? | Answer

This article guides you how to position your NETGEAR Extender effectively. NETGEAR WiFi range Extenders help you keep mobile devices, media players, and computers connected to WiFi with a reliable connection and expanded coverage in every corner of your home. The key to maximize the coverage of an Extender is by choosing the right location.

Placing the Extender:

The ideal location to place the Extender is half-way between your wireless router or access point and your computer (the client), but the Extender must be within the wireless range of the wireless router or access point.

The figure on the left shows a good placement; The figure on the right shows a poor placement.

Tip: If you must use a different location, move the Extender closer to the client, but still within the wireless range of the router. Always check the color of the Router Link LED on the Extender to gauge the connection of the wireless router and the Extender. Green is best, amber is good, while red is poor.

The best connection is established when there is a clear line of sight between the Extender and the wireless router and a clear line of sight between the Extender and the client you are using. If this straight path is blocked by a thick wall or other materials, move the Extender to a different location half-way between the client and the router.

The blue oval shows the original WiFi area without an extension; The green oval shows the extended WiFi area.

If there is no power outlet nearby, or you prefer to place the Extender elsewhere, move the Extender closer to the client. If the Router Link LED is green or amber and the Client Link LED is green or amber, the Extender is working as expected.

The Extender relies on your wireless router or access point for an Internet connection. The Extender loses Internet access if:

  • The wireless router or access point loses the Internet connection.
  • The wireless settings on the wireless router or access point are changed.
  • The WiFi signal of the wireless router or access point fails to reach the Extender.
  • The Extender is out of range of the wireless router or access point.
