Since this is one of the primary ways of increasing your damage (making it potentially even more vital than leveling up), you'll be using tons of these in your time in the Lands Between. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about Smithing Stones, as well as information on locations you'll want to visit to get Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones.

What Are Smithing Stones in Elden Ring?
In Elden Ring, leveling up your character to increase your attributes and stats will only get you so far. Whether you favor strength, magic, health, or endurance - you'll still need a good weapon or catalyst, and you can increase the potency, damage, and how well it scales with your own stats by using Smithing Stones at a Smithing Table or with a Master Smith.
Smithing Stones come in two main types - Regular, and Somber, and have several ranks. Level 1 Smithing Stones can increase your weapon to a +3 effect, while higher ranking stones will allow you to strengthen your weaposn further. Certain weapons that have special properties or unique weapon skills that cannot be swapped out require Somber Smithing Stones instead.
Often times, if you feel you aren't making a dent on a tough enemy or boss, you may need to seek out Smithing Stones to increase your damage output and defeat these challenges.
Where to Find Smithing Stones in Elden Ring - All Locations
Smithing Stones (and Somber Smithing Stones) are found literally all over the Lands Between. They are primarily found on random humanoid bodies you can loot all over the open world, inside mini dungeons, off the beaten path in Legacy Dungeons, and everywhere else. You'll usually find appropriately leveled Smithings Stones relative to the difficulty of the area you are in - sometimes a bit higher, and sometimes a bit lower but in greater quantities. However, Smithing Stones found on placed bodies can only be looted once.
Similarly, you can also look for both Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones in tunnel mines that double as mini dungeons. When inside these ares, you'll often find enemy diggers hard at work mining, and you can interact with the golden clumps of ore along the walls to loot Smithing Stones, or loot the glowing white ore to get Somber Smithing Stones. A few examples of tunnels that hold stones include:
- Limgrave Tunnels - Contains Smithing Stone 1
- Morne Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 1
- Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 2
- Ruin-Strewn Precipice - Contains Smithing Stone 4
- Gael Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 4
- Sellia Crystal Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 5
- Altus Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 5
- Old Altus Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 5
- Yelough Anix Tunnel - Contains Smithing Stone 8
Enemies That Drop Smithing Stones
Though harder to pin down, there are also certain enemies that have a chance to drop smithing stones. Some enemies will disappear after you defeat them, while others can be "farmed" for a low chance to get them. For a better chance, you may have to increase your discovery stat by investing in the Arcane attribute, or using consumables that boost Discovery. These include the following enemies we know of:
- Bladed Lion, Stormveil Castle (one time) - Somber Smithing Stone 1
- Godrick Soldiers, Raya Lucarian Soldiers - Smithing Stone 1
- Exiled Soldiers, Stormveil Castle - Smithing Stone 1

How to Buy Unlimited Smithing Stones
While areas like the Limgrave Tunnels have quite a few Smithing Stone 1s and some Smithing Stone 2s, once you loot the walls, you are left to rely on the low drop chance from killing miners.
Fortunately, there are ways you can buy an unlimited number of Smithing Stones of many different kinds, meaning you can more easily experiment with weapons you are interested in without running out of supplies.
How to Buy Unlimited Smithing Stones 1 and 2
In the area of Liurnia of the Lakes (in the lower, marshy area) you’ll find a Site of Grace called “Academy Gate Town.” From there, ride north and follow the cliffs and you’ll find the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.
Head down to the bottom level and defeat the boss (use Strike weapons and block, then circle around and backstab to have the easiest time) to obtain the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing.
Return to Roundtable Hold and talk to the Maiden Husks. Select “give bell bearing” and then hand it over to add infinite Smithing Stone 1 and 2s to their inventory.
These let you upgrade common weapons to +3 and +6, respectively.
How to Buy Unlimited Somber Smithing Stones 1 and 2
On the western edge of Liurnia of the Lakes, you’ll find the Road To The Manor Site of Grace. Next to it is a friendly giant named Inji who can forge weapons and sells infinite Somber Smithing Stone 1 and 2s, as well as a few finite amounts of Somber Smithing Stone 3 and 4.
These let you upgrade special weapons like Reduvia to +3 and +6, respectively.
In addition to this, you can also find another Bell Bearing, the Sombertone Miner's Bell Bearing 1, in a dungeon known as the Sellia Crystal Tunnel (the same one you can get randomly teleported to from a chest in the Dragon-burnt Ruins).
Inside this Caelid dungeon, you can defeat the Fallingstar Beast to not only get many smithing stones, but also the Bell Bearing that can be given to the Twin Maiden Husks to buy somber stones.
How to Buy Unlimited Smithing Stones 3 and 4
After you arrive at the Altus Plateau, you'll need to make your way through the heavily defended gates to reach Leyndell, the Capital City. Once inside, you'll find a large outer area before reaching the Legacy Dungeon proper - and a large ravine separating the inner wall.
Search along the far south of the ravine below the walls to find the Sealed Tunnel, which is full of illusory walls to lead you further into the mini dungeon. The first main chamber has a chest on the right side guarded by Vulgar Militia, and inside the chest you'll find the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 2.
Take this back to the Twin Maiden Husks and you can buy unlimited quantities of Smithing Stone 3, and Smithing Stone 4.
How to Buy Unlimited Somber Smithing Stones 3 and 4
Also in the Atlus Plateau, head to the center of the region and look along the cliff walls in the valley southeast of the Minor Erdtree for the entrance to the Atlus Tunnels.
You'll need to defeat the two Crytalian bosses (make sure you have striking weapons), and you'll be rewarded with the Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing 2.
Take this back to the Twin Maiden Husks and you can buy unlimited quantities of Somber Smithing Stone 3, Somber Smithing Stone 4, and Cracked Crystals.
