Where To Go Crabbing In Essex? - Romford - Mum's Guide To
Maybe your like
Recently I have had some requests for great places to go crabbing in Essex. I have to admit this isn't something I know a lot about BUT, after a little research I have a fantastic list of options for you.
Things to remember*You'll need a bucket of sea water, a net or a long line and some bait - some bacon rind or a chopped limpet or mussel from a rock pool is perfect! *Be gentle with your catch and watch out for nippers! *Please put your catch back in the water when you've finished.*Check tide times before you travel to ensure tides are out.*Be careful - if you are crabbing on the rocks or near groynes, they can be very slippery. Make sure children are accompanied by an adult at all times.
I haven't visited these venues for crabbing myself, but the information here has all come from other parents who have shared their favourites with me.
Here are the top 10...
1. Southend on SeaThere are three recommended sites along the Southend front. Rock pools can be found near the Ocean Beach cafe, opposite the Toulouse Restaurant and at the Chalkwell end of the beach.
2. Canvey IslandRock pools on the beach where crabbing is popular.
3. Burnham on CrouchA taxi boat will take you to Burhnam where you can sit on the jetty to catch your crabs.
4. HullbridgeWe have been tipped off that there is a great rock pool for crabbing behind the anchor on the beach!
5. Clacton on SeaGo to the section of the beach near the life boat, when the tide goes out there are some great rocks for crabbing. St. Osyth Beach is also recommended for crabbing.
6. MaldonThe area around Promenade Park is the best place for crabbing in Maldon. The most popular spots are the boating lake, along the estuary edge and at Hythe Quay.
7. BrightlingseaSit on the jetty in the harbour and join in as there are sure to be other families crabbing too. You can even catch a ferry from East Mersea if you find yourself there and wanting to visit Brightlingsea!
8. Coalhouse FortThe lake in this park is popular for crabbing and also a great spot for picnics!
9. West MerseaAlong the causeway at West Mersea crabbing is so popular that there are specific areas marked out so remember to only use these areas.
10. Walberswick in SouthwoldOK so we know this isn't technically Essex, it's Suffolk, but it is a very popular spot for crabbing. In fact it's home to the British Crabbing Championships!
