We use whereas to highlight an important difference between two similar things or facts.

Whereas is a conjunction and comes at the beginning of a subordinate (dependent) clause.

We use whereas to show the difference between two things or facts.A square has four sides, whereas a triangle has three.People say 'fries' in America, whereas in Britain they call them 'chips'.
The clause with whereas can also come before the main clause.Whereas Sweden has very cold winters, UK winters are usually quite mild. UK winters are usually quite mild, whereas Sweden has very cold winters.
We can use while instead of whereas.Nuremberg was in West Germany, while/whereas Dresden was in East Germany.
We use a comma before whereas, but not after.

Compare whereas and on the other hand

Whereas and on the other hand have the same function, but there’s a difference in how we use them:

  • In Serbia they use the Cyrillic alphabet, whereas in neighbouring Croatia they use the Roman alphabet.
  • In Serbia they use the Cyrillic alphabet. In neighbouring Croatia, on the other hand, they use the Roman alphabet. 
  • In Serbia they use the Cyrillic alphabet. On the other hand, in neighbouring Croatia they use the Roman alphabet.
