Sunisa Lee is among the leading stars of American gymnastics today. While Simone Biles is the biggest draw in the sport at the moment, Lee’s success has also been eye-catching. Born in the immigrant Hmong community of the USA, Sunisa, also known as Suni Lee, became an Olympic champion when she won gold in the women’s all-around category at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Just 18-years-old, she is yet to complete her collegiate education. Also, competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a great opportunity for any athlete to hone their skills. To achieve both these goals, Suni has joined the prestigious Auburn University of Auburn, Alabama.

Suni started attending the university as a student in August 2021. It was the beginning of her first semester and she now belongs to the Class of 2025. The Olympic champion had signed the National Letter of Intent with Auburn University even before the Olympics, in November 2020. But she took the decision to join this educational institution a while ago.

The head gymnastics coach at Auburn is Jeff Graba, the twin brother of her coach Jess Graba. It was this university’s grounds where Lee had been coming to for the previous five years to continue her training. Training under Jeff Graba honed her skills, and it was only logical that she should join the institution as a full-timer.

Sunisa’s future challenges

Sunisa was among the biggest American stars to emerge from the Tokyo Olympics. It wasn’t just the fact that she was the first Asian-American to win gold in her category, but also the emotional battles she had to endure in the run-up to the Olympics. The teenager lost her uncle and aunt to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even more traumatically, her adoptive father, who has been a pillar of support for her, suffered a terrible accident that left him paralyzed.

But she got over all these hurdles to script one of the most beautiful stories in the history of the Olympics. Now, officially part of the Auburn Tigers women’s gymnastics team, she will be regularly competing in the NCAA championships. But there would be bigger challenges when she seeks to enhance her reputation as a great gymnast at the Paris Olympics and the future World Championships.
