Pokemon was created by Satoshi Tajiri and his friend, illustrator Ken Sugimori. Try our new Pokemon quiz and see which Pokemon you are! The first Pocket Monsters game was released in Japan back in 1996. The name was shortened to Pokemon and the game's appeal soon spread worldwide. Fun Facts

Despite the fact you might think of Pikachu as the Pokemon mascot, it wasn't the first one invented. The very first pocket monster created was Rhydon. Come to think of it, there were a ton of statues in Pokemon Red and Blue, so now you know why! Clefairy and Lapras were also among the earliest design concepts.

Did you know that the original Legendary Bird Pokemons' names contain a clever pun? While Perrserker, Oddish, Koffing and Weezing are cute but obvious plays on words, the Legendary Birds have a sneakier hidden meaning. If you look at the endings of the names Articuno, Zapados and Moltres, you'll find you can count to three in Spanish. Uno, dos, tres. Very clever!
