Modern appliances can be pretty complicated to operate, and Whirlpool dishwasher models are no exception. Even simple things, like adding dish detergent and turning on the machine, require some thought, but you won't need to think about it too much once you get used to it. The main parts of a Whirlpool dishwasher are the water feed tube, water inlet opening, spray arm, overfill protector, heating element, detergent dispenser and rinse-aid dispenser. They all have two dish racks, and some have a third-level rack on the top for flat things, like cutting knives. The racks are adjustable and have smaller parts that you can change. You can also move the rack heights, but you have to do it carefully to ensure you don't damage the dishwasher.

It is best to remove food from the dishes and utensils before loading them in to prevent clogging and make everything easier to clean. The manual has diagrams showing how to load both racks so that the water sprays will reach all the surfaces. The next part is adding the dish detergent to the dispenser. Most dishwashers now specify that rinse aid is needed to get the best results, so you will also want to add that. Close these lids and shut the door.

Now, you can select the proper cycle and push start. This part is where things might get more complicated because there are so many choices. The primary cycles are normal, a fast one-hour wash, heavy, soak and clean and sensor. The last one senses how large the load is and how soiled it is.

You can choose to have the dishwasher run at a later time or decide on a high temperature, heat dry, extended dry and sani-rinse. Choose sani-rinse if you need to sanitize the load per national and international standards for residential dishwashers. Your particular model might have different cycles and options.

The dishwasher door has to click shut before you can use the control pad on the top. To start a wash cycle, press the start button on the keypad. If the power is interrupted or the door opens at any time during a cycle, you will see the start/resume LED light start to flash. Push the start/resume button and close the door right away or the light will continue to flash. You can cancel the cycle by pressing the X button.
