Ever wondered what those ugly white spots are on your toenails after removing your nail polish? It’s quite likely that you have a fungal nail infection, medically termed Onychomycosis. Onychomycosis can result in many shades of unsightly toenail discolourations as well as causing the nail to become brittle and thickened as the infection progresses. The type of fungal nail infection causing white spots is known as Superficial White Onychomycosis.

Superficial White Onychomycosis often occurs after nail polish has been left on for too long causing the polish to lift ever so slightly leaving a moist, warm environment between the polish and the nail for fungal spores to thrive.

This can be easily treated with either a topical antifungal polish/lacquer or PACT fungal nail therapy. One of the downsides to using antifungal nail solutions is that you can’t put any nail polish on whilst treating, which can be up to 3 months. With PACT, after the 1st week, you can start reapplying nail polish as long it’s changed regularly.

Some Melbourne clinics offer laser fungal nail treatment. These lasers do require heat to kill the fungus which can be quite uncomfortable. We use PACT because it is harmless to other cells, is painless, safe and cost-effective.
