BROOKLYN Center Mayor Mike Elliot has been trending on social media over his response to the police-related death of Daunte Wright in Minnesota.

The mayor has called for the officer who shot Wright to step down and has fired the Brooklyn Center City manager over comments regarding the cop involved.

Who is Mayor Mike Elliott and how old is he?

Mike Elliott, 36, is the first black mayor of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

He hails from Liberia and moved to the US when he was 11 years old.

Elliott founded Fastforward Education in 2002, a foundation dedicated to fostering academic success at Brooklyn Center Jr/Sr High School.

He is also a former member of the Brooklyn Bridge Alliance and a former board member of Brooklyn Peacemaker Center.

The mayor is also a small business owner for over a decade and holds a degree in international management and political science.

What did Mike Elliott say about Daunte Wright’s death?

Elliott addressed the press in a conference regarding Wright’s death and called it “devastating.”

Upon finding out that Wright’s death was police related, the mayor said: “We are all collectively devastated and we have been for over a year now by the killing of George Floyd and that we continue to be distressed as we go through the Derek Chauvin trial.

“So having a police involved shooting happen in our community and killing a young man is heartbreaking and just unfathomable.”

He also called for City Manager Curt Boganey to be fired from his job post after the manager previously told reporters that the officer involved in Wright’s death, Kimberley Potter would get “due process” after the shooting.

Elliot wrote on Twitter: “Effective immediately our city manager has been relieved of his duties, and the deputy city manager will be assuming his duties moving forward.

“I will continue to work my hardest to ensure good leadership at all levels of our city government.”

Potter resigned from her position Tuesday April 13 after many people in the community called for her resignation.

In a letter addressed to Mayor Elliott, Mr. Edwards and Chief Gannon she said “I am tendering my resignation from the Brooklyn Center Police Department effective immediately.”

“I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately. Sincerely, Officer Kim Potter”.

What happened to Daunte Wright?

Wright, 20, was tragically shot by Potter after being pulled over for a traffic violation on April 11.

Police said when they tried to arrest Wright, who they determined had an outstanding warrant, he got back in his vehicle.

“One officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver,” police said. “The vehicle traveled several blocks before striking into another vehicle.”

Cops said the officer who fired the fatal shot intended to use a Taser, not a handgun.

Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as an “accidental discharge.”

Wright died at the scene while his girlfriend – who was in the vehicle – also sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The 20-year-old was a father to toddler Daunte Jr.

Wright’s sobbing mother Katie told a crowd he called her to say he had been pulled over by police because of an air freshener that was dangling from his rear view mirror.

She said she heard officers tell her son to put his phone down, and then one of the officers ended the call.

Soon after, her son’s girlfriend told her he had been shot.

She told reporters: “All he did was have air fresheners in the car and they told him to get out of the car.

“He got out of the car and his girlfriend said they shot him.
