Who Owns GMC?

General Motors Truck Company, or GMC for short, is a subsidiary of General Motors, or GM. With it started mainly as a truck manufacturer, GMC now makes popular SUVs and pickup trucks like the renowned GMC Sierra 1500. Other GM subsidiaries, aside from GMC, include:

  • Max Grabowsky began Rapid Motor Vehicle Company to develop some of the world's first trucks. After a time, GM acquired Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1909.
  • The acquisition of Rapid Motor in 1909 led to the formation of General Motors Truck Company, or GMC.
  • In 1912, GMC released its first mass-produced truck, and over 22,000 were sold.
  • During WWII, GMC provided a wide variety of trucks to the U.S. Military. In fact, GMC produced over 600,000 trucks for military usage.
  • Fun Fact: GMC and Chevrolet trucks are both made in the same plants using many of the same parts. GMC and Chevy trucks, however, differ in their features and trims, as GMC is generally regarded as a more premium brand than Chevrolet.

  • Fort Wayne Assembly Plant in Roanoke, Indiana – The GMC Sierra is built here.
  • Arlington Assembly Plant in Arlington, Texas – The GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are built here.
  • Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant in Delta Township, Michigan – The GMC Acadia is built here.
  • Shreveport Operations in Shreveport, Louisiana – The GMC Canyon is built here.
  • Wentzville Assembly Plant in Wentzville, Missouri
  • CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada – The GMC Terrain is built here.
  • Terrain have been made in Mexico since 2018.
  • Canyon is made in Wentzville, MO.
  • Many Sierra LD Sierra come from Silao, MX.
