Changing Views on Incarceration

Aftermath of Closure

Alcatraz officially closed on March 21, 1963. The remaining inmates were transferred to other federal prisons, such as USP Leavenworth and USP Marion. The island later became a part of the National Park Service and opened to the public in the 1970s. Today, Alcatraz is a popular tourist destination, offering tours that explore its history, architecture, and infamous escape attempts.
