Myths and fables about dragons hoarding and sleeping on gold go back at least to Roman antiquity; notably in the Fables of Phaedrus and Cicero's Philippics, and it likely has its roots in Greek tradition. It's one of those ideas that is so old we're not sure exactly how it started. A lot of fantasy stories/settings have tried to rationalize why dragons do it. What's your preferred explanation?

I did read one story when the reason for dragons hording treasure was that they some how leech minerals from the metal while sleeping on it and if they don't they get sick and die.

At least in European mythology dragons were personifications of greed and acted as a contrast to kings. It was a kings duty to distribute treasure among his people as opposed to hoarding it. You can see this in Beowulf where Beowulf (King) is known for giving great gifts to his people. Then he goes and defeats the dragon who is sitting atop a pile of treasure, so that he can distribute that treasure to his people.

But gold is a weak metal. Why would they want to have something like that weighing them down?

Subscriber It's a soft metal and as such comfortable to sleep on if you weight a few hundred tons. You try finding somewhere that's either not to soft or dirty when you are a giant dragon.
